Our San Miguel culinary tour is much more than a cooking vacation. They will allow you to transport Mexico's fascinating culinary heritage into your own kitchen. San Miguel de Allende, a historic treasure in the mountains of central Mexico, stands still in time with its pastel-colored houses, centuries-old churches, and cobblestone streets. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, rated by Condé Nast as the best city in the world to live, San Miguel offers a laid-back escape full of delicious experiences.

Arrive by personal driver or shuttle service to San Miguel, enjoying the rugged countryside that is typical of Mexico's central highlands along the way. At sunset we'll gather for a cocktail reception to get acquainted and discuss our plans for the week. Dinner at one of San Miguel's most popular restaurants.


day 2: Italian Culinary Tour

Discovering a Colonial Gem

After breakfast we'll enjoy a guided walking tour of San Miguel, known as "The Forge of Independence" for the important role it played in gaining Mexico's independence from Spain. We'll visit colonial churches, wander past 400-year-old homes and get a feel for how San Miguel manages to be both a vibrant contemporary Mexican town and a true colonial gem. After breaking for churros and hot chocolate we’ll head to the local market to peruse stalls piled high with tropical fruits, fresh vegetables, chiles, herbs, and flowers. Then we’ll head back to the house to delve into the secrets of the traditional Mexican kitchen with a fresh-from-the-market cooking class and late lunch. Free evening.

Factories of Dolores Hidalgo - Mexico Cooks day 1: Italian Culinary Tour

Ceramics & Chile Rellenos

We'll spend the morning shopping at the ceramic factories of Dolores Hidalgo. See a demonstration of how Mexico's famed talavera pottery is made and hand-painted. Lunch at Vicente’s—famous for its carnitas before heading back to San Miguel to learn the art of making chiles rellenos. Prepare traditional cheese-stuffed Poblano peppers, as well as Chiles en Nogada and Ancho chiles stuffed with refried beans.


day 4: Italian Culinary Tour

Ghost Towns

Day trip to Pozos with a hike through the deserted ruins of the once famous silver mining town. Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon cooking class featuring naturally healthy Mexican cuisine.

day 5: Italian Culinary Tour

Moles

Free morning to schedule a massage or explore the town. The afternoon features a class on moles. We’ll learn how to make the traditional black mole, as well as green mole, and then incorporate them into a fabulous dinner, starting with tortilla soup.


day 6: Italian Culinary Tour

Guanajuato!

After breakfast we’re off to Guanajuato, an historic jewel one hour from San Miguel. This colonial town features underground streets, colorful shops, and houses climbing up the steep hillsides. We’ll lunch on specialties from the Bajio region. Free evening to explore the town's varied restaurants and nightclubs.

day 7: Italian Culinary Tour

Local Artisans

We’ll start the morning with a guided tour of San Miguel's mask museum, then continue on to local artisan workshops. San Miguel is famous for its tin ware, paper maché, wrought iron, and silver. An afternoon cooking class and lunch featuring a fusion menu. Learn how to take the best of traditional Mexican cuisine and transform it into new, inspiring dishes. We'll spend our last evening together at the award winning Rosewood Restaurant.

After breakfast return to your airport of choice or another destination in Mexico.

*included in the San Miguel culinary tour are 7 nights accommodations at Susurro B&B or in a deluxe private villa (depending on group size) with breakfast, all ground transportation after arriving in San Miguel, all group activities, cooking classes and demonstrations, as well as all the meals listed in the itinerary.

A $1000 deposit is needed to secure your place in the San Miguel culinary tour. Since the number of participants is limited and accommodations vary, early registration is advised. The balance of the tour is due 60 days prior to departure. If not received by that time, DELICIOUS EXPEDITIONS reserves the right to treat the reservation as canceled.

We are happy to accommodate a friend or spouse who wants to join the tour but not attend the cooking classes: The cost of a non-cooking participant is $1500. The price includes everything listed above except for cooking classes.

Not Included: Airfare and transportation to and San Migue de Allendel.
