Fresh from the garden…and the forest, is the theme of our culinary tour to Slovenia. Enjoy a fun-filled week in one of Europe’s newest hot spots. Slovenia, nestled between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, has been getting a lot of attention lately from savvy travelers. With its medieval villages, storybook castles, cosmopolitan cities, and lush green forest, there’s something for everyone.

Slovenia’s rich culinary history has its roots firmly planted in both Italian and Austrian fare. The cooking portion of the tour will focus on organic farm (and forest) to table cuisine with an emphasis on seasonality and sustainability. After a few days in the picturesque capital of Ljubljana, the group will move on to the Krka Valley with its rolling hills, charming villages and farmhouses.

At the Novak Lodge, the group will work with the freshest ingredients available--from the river, the forest and backyard garden. In addition to the cooking classes there will be plenty of time for day trips to nearby towns, castles, and vineyards, before returning to the warm hearth and comfort of the lodge in the evening.

day 3: Italian Culinary Tour

We'll head to the Novak Lodge by way of the scenic Julian Alps. Our first stop, Skopia Loka, is one of Slovenia’s best-preserved medieval towns. After walking the narrow, cobblestone streets, we’ll lunch on local specialties at a centuries-old restaurant. We’ll then continue on to scenic Lake Bled with a tour of its castle and famous pastry shops.

day 4: Italian Culinary Tour

Visit Sticna Abbey, the oldest monastery in the country, before heading to Otecec castle for lunch.  An afternoon cooking class will be followed by dinner with wine pairing.

day 5: Italian Culinary Tour

Predjama castle, romantically nestled into a hillside, is our first stop on the way to Slovenia’s most famous wine region--Nova Gorica. We’ll lunch at an acclaimed restaurant and enjoy a wine tasting with a local family at their vineyards. Then we'll cross the border into Italy and visit Trieste, the country's northernmost port city. Enjoy the coffeehouses and wander the scenic streets.

day 6: Italian Culinary Tour

We’ll begin our day with a mushroom hunt in the forest. Then gather in the kitchen to make the fruits of our labor into an inviting meal. The afternoon will be full of optional activities: hiking, cooking or visiting the nearby famed spa town of Dolenjske Toplice. Dinner.
